Early Onset Dementia Support for Veterans

Being diagnosed with early onset dementia can feel overwhelming, bringing uncertainty at a time when many veterans are still working, supporting loved ones, and enjoying active, independent lives.

At Veterans Dementia Support UK, we believe that no veteran should face this journey alone.

We provide a welcoming and understanding community where veterans and their families can find friendship, practical support, advice, and opportunities to stay connected and engaged.

Our support is tailored to individual needs and circumstances, including access to day care services when required, meaningful social activities, peer support from others with shared experiences, and flexible assistance outside traditional daytime hours for veterans who remain in paid employment during the early stages of dementia.

By focusing on strengths, wellbeing, and continued independence, we help veterans and their families navigate the challenges of dementia with confidence, dignity, and the reassurance that support is always there when it is needed.

What is Early Onset Dementia

Early onset dementia, sometimes called young-onset dementia, is dementia that develops in a person under the age of 65.

It is not a specific type of dementia, but a term used to describe dementia diagnosed at a younger age.

People with early onset dementia may experience:

  • Memory problems

  • Difficulty concentrating or planning tasks

  • Changes in behaviour or personality

  • Problems with language or communication

  • Difficulty carrying out everyday activities

  • Changes in mood, confidence, and wellbeing

  •

For veterans, the impact can be particularly significant because many are still working, supporting families, managing finances, or caring for others when symptoms begin.

Family Support

hen a veteran is diagnosed with early onset dementia, the impact is often felt by the whole family. Partners, children, parents, and close friends may all face new challenges as they adjust to changes in daily life, relationships, and future plans. At Veterans Dementia Support UK, we recognise that supporting the family is just as important as supporting the individual.

Our family support services provide practical guidance, emotional support, peer networks, respite opportunities, and access to specialist advice. We work alongside families to help them better understand dementia, build confidence, and ensure they never feel alone on their journey.

As part of this commitment, we are proud to offer Young Hearts, Young Minds, a pioneering service designed specifically for the children and young people of veterans living with early onset dementia. Through age-appropriate support, activities, education, and opportunities to connect with others in similar circumstances, the programme helps young people understand dementia, express their feelings, build resilience, and maintain positive family relationships during what can be a challenging time.

Together, we help families remain connected, informed, and supported, ensuring that every member of the family has the opportunity to thrive despite the challenges dementia may bring.

Working and Workplace Adaptions

Many veterans diagnosed with early onset dementia continue to work successfully for months or even years after diagnosis when the right support is in place. At Veterans Dementia Support UK, we help veterans and their families understand the workplace adjustments and practical support available to help maintain employment, confidence, and independence.

Workplace adaptations may include flexible working hours, adjusted duties, additional written instructions, memory aids, assistive technology, quieter workspaces, and regular wellbeing reviews.

We can also provide guidance for employers and families, helping everyone work together to create a supportive and understanding environment. With the right support and reasonable adjustments, many veterans can continue making valuable contributions in the workplace while maintaining their wellbeing and quality of life.

Ongoing Care, Support and Connection

At Veterans Dementia Support UK, we provide ongoing care and support for veterans living with early onset dementia and their families. We understand that needs change over time, which is why our support continues throughout the dementia journey, offering reassurance, practical help, and a community that truly understands.

Our services include peer support, dementia-friendly activities, age-appropriate social opportunities, and regular family support groups held during evenings and weekends to accommodate work, education, and family commitments. These groups provide a safe and welcoming space to share experiences, build friendships, access advice, and gain support from others facing similar challenges.

All of our support services are provided free of charge, ensuring that veterans and their families can access help when they need it most, without financial barriers.

We are also working with partner organisations, healthcare providers, and care specialists to explore and develop services that better meet the needs of younger people living with dementia. This includes dedicated day support services, age-appropriate respite opportunities, and the development of longer-term care and accommodation options that recognise the unique circumstances, aspirations, and life stages of those diagnosed at a younger age.

By bringing together veterans, families, carers, and partner organisations, we aim to create a future where younger people with dementia have access to the specialist support, care, and opportunities they deserve.
