Dementia Support for those serving in the Merchant Navy

Veterans Dementia Support for the Merchant Navy is dedicated to supporting serving and former Merchant Navy personnel who are living with dementia, as well as family members, partners, and carers who provide vital day-to-day support. Recognising the unique experiences and challenges faced by those who have spent their lives at sea, our service aims to provide specialist guidance, practical assistance, companionship, and advocacy tailored to the maritime community.

We welcome individuals from all ranks and departments across the Merchant Navy, including those who have served on cargo vessels, passenger and cruise ships, fishing fleets, offshore support vessels, and naval auxiliary services. Whether someone is newly diagnosed with dementia, living with the condition, concerned about memory changes, or caring for a loved one, we strive to ensure that no member of the maritime family faces dementia alone.

Our support services include:

  • Information and advice on dementia diagnosis, treatment, and care pathways.

  • Emotional support for veterans, families, and carers.

  • Peer support groups bringing together people with shared maritime backgrounds and experiences.

  • Social activities designed to reduce isolation and promote wellbeing.

  • Signposting to health, welfare, financial, and legal support services.

  • Assistance with accessing veterans' benefits, charitable grants, and maritime welfare organisations.

  • Dementia awareness training and educational resources for families and communities.

  • Advocacy to help individuals navigate health and social care systems.

Many Merchant Navy veterans have spent long periods away from home, served in demanding environments, and developed close bonds within the seafaring community. Dementia can present unique emotional and practical challenges, particularly when maritime service has been such a significant part of an individual's identity. Our approach is centred on preserving dignity, promoting independence, and recognising the lifelong contribution made by those who served at sea.

Through compassion, understanding, and specialist knowledge, Veterans Dementia Support seeks to create a safe and welcoming community where Merchant Navy veterans, their families, and carers can access the support they need, share experiences, and maintain meaningful connections throughout their dementia journey.

Honouring a lifetime of service at sea while supporting those navigating the challenges of dementia ashore.
